SIMON SAYS:

GIMME SHELTER ISLAND!

Writer, bon-vivant, and absolute icon Simon Doonan is also known as Jonathan’s shorter half. Today he's low key letting us know where to find him this summer.

Sparkles

Shelter Island is cool without knowing it. Jonathan Adler and I have been summering here for a quarter of a century. We love the small town vibe and the lack of pretension.

SIMON'S CAN'T-MISS SPOTS

Finley's Fiction, Shelter Island Heights

Nestling in Shelter Island Heights, you will find Finley's Fiction, a groovy independent bookstore operated by Finley Oakley Shore. In addition to all the new must-reads, Finley also supports local authors such as Christine Coulson, Ariel Levy, and moi.

The IGA, Shelter Island grocery store

The IGA is my favorite hang-out. When I say they have everything I am not kidding. They even boast a street-wear boutique with clothing designed by talented local designer Anthony Peronace.

The Sunset Beach Hotel and Restaurant, Shelter Island

The Sunset Beach Hotel and Restaurant adds a jolt of high-voltage Riviera glamour to Shelter Island. I am too geriatric to deal with the weekend crowds but often make midweek lunch-dates with my Shelter pals.

The Whale's Tale, Shelter Island mini-golf

The Whale's Tale is a fabulously funky old-school miniature-golf establishment. Not just for kids. I often send house-guests to the W.T. if they are starting to get on my nerves.

Wherever you summer, give it all the mood-enhancing moments the season calls for, from oversized beach towels and al fresco favorites to our new range of cushy outdoor couture.
